To whom it may concern
It is with great pleasure that I recommend Dr. Fernando Marques for promotion to Prof. Catedrático in the University of Lisbon. I first met Dr. Marques in 1999 during EGU X in Strasbourg, France, and have become ever since familiar with his research. Later in 1999, I visited Lisbon with a PhD student of mine, Daniel Schmid, following an invitation by Dr. Marques. We visited the experimental tectonics lab and discussed future collaboration. Dr. Marques impressed me as a deep thinker and innovative researcher, enthusiastic scientist and devoted educator. I invited him as keynote speaker in the “Mantle Convection and Lithosphere Deformation” Symposium at EGU XI, 2001, and have started long term collaboration.
I had the pleasure of doing fieldwork with Dr. Marques in SW Portugal and in the Western Gneiss Region in Norway. Fernando impressed me with his excellent abilities as a field geologist.
Dr. Marques' publication record is very impressive. It shows his ability to use many different approaches toward the understanding of observations. It shows that he uses the appropriate scientific approach: detailed observation, data analysis and modeling. He combines detailed field observations at all scales with analogue experiments, numerical modeling and laboratory experiments on real rocks. The publication record shows that he can use many diverse tools to retrieve the geodynamic evolution of large-scale regions: structural geology and tectonics, analogue and numerical modeling, experimental deformation of rocks, physics and mathematics, geomorphology, petrology, geochemistry, geochronology, geomagnetism, geodesy and geophysical sounding methods. The publication record shows his interest in many relevant fields of geosciences, from fundamental to applied, from small- to large-scale, from internal to external processes, from basic Plate Tectonics problems to regional geology problems.
In particular, Dr. Marques has the ability to relate Internal and External Geodynamics, as shown by his publications relating erosion, climate and topography (External Geodynamics) with mountain building (Internal Geodynamics), and by his research project on landslides (External Geodynamics) in volcanic islands (Internal Geodynamics).
Dr. Marques' publication rate has accelerated through the last years, and the increasing appreciation of his research by the international scientific community is indicated by the exponential growth of citations, with almost 70 citations so far this year. His high standing in the international community is further indicated by him being chosen as the organizer of the 2010 GeoMod conference, by his Editorial Board membership in the most prestigious journal Tectonophysics, and top reviewer award by another prestigious journal, the Journal of Structural Geology.
Dr. Marques has mentored one post-doc and several PhD and MSc students, and has raised a significant amount of research funding.
For all the above reasons, I sincerely support the promotion of Dr. Marques to the position of Prof. Catedrático in the University of Lisbon.
Sincerely yours,
Yury Podladchikov
