(1) No ranking internacional das Universidades no domínio das Ciências Naturais e da Terra, a Université de Rennes 1 ocupa a posição 214 a nível mundial (ver aqui);
(2) Peter R. Cobbold é um dos maiores especialistas mundiais em Mecânica das Rochas, contando com mais de 100 publicações nas melhores revistas da especialidade referenciadas no SCI/ISI.

Letter of recommendation for Fernando Ornelas Marques
I take pleasure in writing this letter in support of an application by Fernando Ornelas Marques for a permanent position (Prof. Catedrático) in the Geology Department at the University of Lisbon.
I have known Fernando Marques since the early 1990s, when he came to Rennes to do some experimental modelling in our laboratory. At that time, his interests were in ductile deformation of orogenic areas and he was working mainly with Professor Antonio Ribeiro.
Some years later, his interests broadened, to include tectonic processes at all scales. He set up a laboratory for tectonic modelling at Lisbon University and we worked together, investigating the effects of topographic relief on the curvature of thrust belts. This led to two publications (Marques and Cobbold, 2002, 2006). For the latter, Fernando again came to Rennes, where we had facilities for modelling at the scale of the lithosphere.
One of Fernando’s students, Nuno Lourenço, also came to Rennes, to do some experiments on spreading and transform faulting at oceanic ridges and this led to a common paper (Marques, Cobbold and Lourenço, 2007). Finally, Fernando published by himself the results of some experiments on thrusting that he did here in Rennes (Marques, 2008).
I had the pleasure of doing some fieldwork with Fernando Marques in the foothills of the Andes, Argentina, at a time when one of his students had come to Rennes, to do a PhD. Fernando impressed me with his excellent abilities as a field geologist. As a result of the trip, we published an extended abstract (Cobbold, Rossello and Marques, 2008), questioning the importance of Oligocene extension in that part of the Andes.
More generally, Fernando Marques has published at least 52 articles in peer-reviewed international journals over the last 20 years (for an average of 2.3 articles/year) and has at least 3 more in press. Significantly, his publishing activity has increased in recent years (7 papers in 2010, 3 in 2009, 7 in 2008). Much of this has come about through collaboration with colleagues in Zurich (especially J.-P. Burg).
Fernando has also been active in organizing international meetings, especially GeoMod2010 in Lisbon.
Finally, I should emphasize that Fernando is a very dynamic, enthusiastic and able scientist, who will probably continue to make a name for himself and to help establish the reputation of Lisbon University.
For all these reasons, I recommend that the University of Lisbon consider him carefully for a permanent position.
